Description
There’s a lot more to Inverness than just Nessie! One of the places you can’t miss is Culloden Battlefield, where Bonnie Prince Charlie was defeated by the British to end the 1745 Jacobite Uprising. So hop off there to visit the battlefield itself and imagine the raging fighting that, though it lasted a mere hour, saw some two thousand men lose their lives.
You can also visit the Cumberland Stone, an enormous rock, from which the Duke of Cumberland is said to have watched the battle. If you fancy stretching your legs, take a walk to see the impressive Clava Cairns, a series of Bronze Age tomb chambers.
Also, make sure you hop off pay a visit to the Cromwell Tower, all that remains of the fortification that Cromwell built in the city to help maintain power in Scotland after his forces had conquered it. And maybe take a stroll to the edge of Beauly Firth to look out on this magnificent expanse of water.
