Description
Porto is an incredible destination. It’s a city with history, charm, culture and a definite contemporary spark. We just love to visit it! There would be no Porto, however, without the Douro. The Phoenicians established a trading post here at the mouth of the river nearly 3000 years ago. We bet they couldn’t believe their luck when they first discovered this extraordinary location.
Magnificent Six Bridges Cruise along the River Douro
So, to really appreciate Porto, a cruise along the river is pretty much a must. Our Six Bridges Cruise takes you along the Douro past Porto’s world-famous port lodges and under the city’s six legendary bridges.
The six bridges that span the Douro are the iconic Dom Luis I Bridge, which, famous for its spectacular arch, you’ll have seen in a thousand photos of Porto. Less well-known but equally splendid is the Arrábida Bridge, which curves elegantly over the river. The Infante D. Henrique Bridge is the most modern of the 6 bridges. Nearly 400 metres across, this delightful bridge appears to defy gravity as it crosses the river 75 metres above the water!
The Maria Pia Bridge is one of the great works of Gustav Eiffel. This extraordinary railway bridge has been standing proud for nearly 150 years, though today it’s no longer in use. The job of taking trains over the river now belongs to the São João Bridge. Its sleek modern design stands in contrast to that of the Maria Pia.
Last but not least is the Freixo Bridge, the lowest of the six yet also the widest with an incredible span of more than 700 metres.
There’s so much more than just bridges to see. Porto is a beautiful city and the riverside port lodges are some of the city’s most attractive buildings. The way the river cuts through the landscape is also something that will live long in your memory.
Hop-On Hop-Off Porto
Once back on dry land, it’s time to start exploring Porto itself. Our hop-on hop-off bus features two brilliant routes that were carefully designed to make sure that you get to see all the brilliant things that Porto has in store for you.
Our red route explores the city’s historic centre where you can see Porto’s most important sights such as the Torre dos Clérigos and the Igreja de São Francisco (San Francisco Church), before heading out to the coast and the stunning ocean views from Castelo do Queijo.
The blue route heads over the Douro into Vila Nova da Gaia, the centre of the port wine industry. One of our favourite places to hop off is the Jardim do Morro, a delightful park where you can enjoy fantastic views of Oporto across the Douro.
Night Tour
On top of all this, there’s a nighttime bus tour, which will let you see the city in a whole new light. On a lovely cool evening, riding through Porto on our open-top bus is an utter delight.
2 Free Walking Tours
To really put the icing on the cake on your Porto experience, we’ve included 2 brilliant walking tours. One will take you round the city’s historic centre and the other will bring you across the river to explore Vila Nova da Gaia, the home of port wine.
Your ticket also includes a free port wine tasting, so what are you waiting for? Book the ultimate Porto experience today!
