Description
A “hands-on experience of history” is the DDR Museum’s motto, and a visit to the museum is exactly that: hands-on and very interactive. Open doors, and search through drawers and wardrobes to reveal information and original objects that shine a light on what daily life was like in socialist East Germany.
The permanent exhibit features three themed areas: Public Life, State and Ideology and Life in a Tower Block. You will discover hundreds of original objects, learn about everyday life, politics, the origins of socialism and its influence, the surveillance techniques used by the feared Stasi and much more. In an authentically reconstructed and fully furnished tower block flat, you’ll get a real feel for what life was like in this closed country.
Sit on the sofa and take a family portrait, admire the gadgets in the kitchen or rummage through the wardrobe featuring hats, skirts and shirts produced in the German Democratic Republic. You can also sit in an original Trabi, turn the ignition and go for a 3D simulated drive around an East German housing estate. In addition, there are ever-changing temporary exhibits.
With so many fun and entertaining exhibits it’s no wonder the DDR Museum has twice been nominated for the European Museum of the Year Award and is the most popular museum in Germany for foreign visitors.
