Description
A thousand years ago, Cordoba was one of the most important cities in the world. As capital of the Caliphate of Cordoba, it was the centre of power and culture in Islamic Spain. That’s when the Mezquita was built, more than 1200 years ago. At the time, it was one of the main mosques in the Muslim world. When the city was conquered by the Christians in the 13th century, the mosque was converted into a cathedral and later, in the 16th century, a Renaissance nave and transept were constructed right in middle of the old mosque. Upon seeing it, Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, who had given his permission for the work, supposedly said, “You have destroyed something unique to build something commonplace.
Was he right? Well, with our Mezquita Experience ticket you get admission and a guided tour of the cathedral-mosque, so you´ll be able to decide yourself. Our opinion is that the change made the Mezquita even more unique!
The Mezquita is definitely the star attraction of our Mezquita Experience, but there’s a whole lot more to your ticket. Not least is the 48-hour hop-on hop-off bus ticket, which will let you explore Cordoba to your heart’s content. We’ve got two routes in the city, one blue (Córdoba Intima), the other red (Córdoba Panorámica), so we’ve got the city covered. The blue route is the one to use to explore Cordoba’s historic centre, with stops by such unmissable attractions as the Alcázar de los Reyes Cristianos and the nearby Roman Bridge that spans the Guadalquivir. One of our favourite places you can hop off is the Arco del Portillo, where you can see the charming medieval arch that used to be part of the wall that separated two different parts of the city.
The red route has its own highlights too, such as the Mercado de la Victoria, where you can delight in the delicious food from a variety of different stalls. As you’re in Cordoba, you have to try Salmorejo, a local speciality which is like a gazpacho but thicker and just as tasty. It’s especially good on a hot summer’s day!
To get to know the city even better, you can take the walking tour of the Jewish Quarter and the Axerquía, two of Cordoba’s most historic and atmospheric neighbourhoods. It’s two hours of entertainment in an educational way. You’ll be a true Cordoba expert when it’s finished. All in all, our Cordoba Mezquita Experience is one you’ll never forget.
