    Description

    Explore Riga with City Sightseeing

Over the course of its roughly 800 years of existence, Riga has been ruled by Poland, Sweden, the Russian Empire, Nazi Germany and the Soviet Union, before finally gaining its independence in 1991. As a result, Riga offers a treasure trove of history and culture waiting to be unearthed by visitors.

With our City Sightseeing Hop-On Hop-Off Bus Tour, we’ll show you all of Riga’s must-see attractions. As you travel, you’ll hear fascinating stories and facts about Latvia’s capital. And when you see something that piques your interest? Hop off and explore! Once you’re done, hop back on and continue exploring.

    Red Route

You can choose from our two fantastic routes and switch between the two as you please. Here are some of the highlights of our Riga Red Route:

    • Old Town: hop on our bus to begin your journey in the heart of Riga’s charming old town, where you’ll see some of the most exceptional architecture in Europe, including Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles.
    • Freedom Monument: built in 1935 to honour the soldiers killed during the Latvian War of Independence, this monument stands 42 metres tall and is a popular public gathering place.
    • Latvian National Opera: be sure to hop off at this handsome neoclassical opera house, yet another of Riga’s stunning buildings. If you’re a fan of opera or ballet, you could even try to catch a performance!
    • Vermanes Garden: this park was donated to the city by a Prussian widow in the 1810s and boasts formal gardens and exotic trees and is a great place to have a coffee at one of the seasonal cafes.
    • Powder Tower: built in 1650 as part of Riga’s defence system, this tower is so named because it was where the city’s stash of gunpowder was stored. As well as being for weapons storage, the hideously historic tower was also used as a prison and torture chamber.

      Blue Route

Hop off on our Blue Route to see more of the unique architecture that makes Riga’s historic centre a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here are just some of Riga’s amazing sights to experience on our Blue Route:
    • Art Nouveau District: this area features many wonderful Art Nouveau apartment buildings, built at the start of the 20th century, when Riga was enjoying perhaps its greatest period of prosperity. With a third of its buildings being Art Nouveau in style, Riga has a higher concentration of this distinctive architecture than anywhere else in the world, which helps make it such an elegant city.
    • President’s Castle: make sure you hop off at this impressive mediaeval castle. Construction began back in 1330, and it has been the residence of the president of Latvia since 1922.
    • Orthodox Cathedral: this ornate cathedral is the largest Orthodox church in Riga. Hop off here to learn its long and tumultuous history and find out how this sacred building survived the Soviet Era by temporarily becoming a planetarium.
    • Central Market:hop off in Riga’s Moscow suburb to visit this impressively resilient market which has lived through many ups and downs but has been standing proud since 1930.

Book our Riga hop-on hop-off bus tour today to experience Riga, one of Europe’s finest hidden gems!
