Description
The fun starts as you board our comfortable coach. You’ll spend the journey learning all about the origins of the Irish language. Our expert driver/guide is happy to share fascinating insights and local knowledge on how Connemara has retained the Irish language (Gaelic) as its native language.
Leenane Village
The first stop on our tour is the traditional village of Leenane. This charming, quaint little town is surrounded by an impressive landscape of mountains, lakes and lush green scenery. It’s guarded by Leenane Mountain, one of the famously rugged Maumturks mountains. There’s time for you to get off the coach and explore independently; it’s up to you whether you sit and have a cuppa or go for a stroll!
Killary Fjord
The incredible scenery continues at the next stop: Killary, Ireland’s only fjord. You’ll want to have your camera at the ready for this one. The spectacular fjord is overlooked by the brooding Mweelrea mountain. Make sure you look out along the coast towards the wild beaches that mark the point where the fjord meets the wild Atlantic Ocean.
Kylemore Abbey and the Victorian Walled Gardens
The remarkable Kylemore Abbey started life as a very extravagant gift from a husband to a wife. Mitchell Henry, a wealthy London-dwelling doctor, gave this stunning complex to his very lucky wife, Margaret. The magnificent 19th-century abbey perches on a lake amid the mountains. You’ll be able to explore the Benedictine Abbey, check out the miniature neo-Gothic church and admire the beautiful Victorian walled gardens. And admission is included in your ticket!
An Spidéal
Our tour continues on to the Inagh Valley, and the journey is all part of the experience as we’ll drive along a breathtaking stretch of road. Make sure you take photos of the picturesque Twelve Bens, Connemara National Park’s mountain range.
Our final stop before we return to Galway is quite possibly our favourite Irish seaside village, An Spidéal. This traditional town is part of the Gaeltacht, the parts of Ireland where Gaelic is still spoken as a first language. Only 2% of Irish people still live in areas like these! If you want a taste of Irish culture, this is your town; it doesn’t get more Irish than this! Finally, if you’re feeling brave, you can have a quick paddle in the invigorating Atlantic Ocean!
