Everyone knows that Sintra is a city of incredible palaces and stunning countryside, but another of its highlights is the queijada de Sintra, a delicious mix of sweet and savoury that originates in this spectacular city. Queijadas are little cakes made with cheese, flour, eggs, sugar and cinnamon and when you try one, you’ll understand why the locals have been eating them for at least eight hundred years. In fact, the earliest written reference to queijadas talks about them being used to pay land taxes as far back as 1227. It’s a shame taxes can’t be paid using cake today! Sintra is said to take its name from the Moorish goddess of the moon. After arriving from the harsh deserts of North Africa, the Moors decided to settle in the lush forests and mountains of Sintra, which were an otherworldly paradise for them.
