Description
Lisbon, like Rome, is a city built on seven hills. Perhaps the most famous of all is that which Sao Jorge Castle sits atop. The views from the castle are as good as any others in the city. The walk to the castle is one of the hardest! That’s what makes our Green Route in Lisbon the perfect way to explore this part of the city.
Hop on the bus at Marques de Pombal, or any other stops on the route, and head up to the top of the hill. There have been fortifications for more than 2,000 years! The current castle dates back more than a thousand years. Twice destroyed by earthquakes, it was fully restored to its former glory in the 20th century. No visit to Lisbon is complete without seeing the city from the castle.
Another lofty highlight of the city is the Bairro Alto (the upper district). Hop off here and explore this vibrant district. This picturesque neighborhood is a maze of colorful streets and lanes, of bohemian atmosphere by day and notorious nightlife after sundown.
Known as the arty district, Bairro Alto is a juxtaposition of traditional Fado houses, trendy bars, unique local boutiques, and dynamic art studios. Indulge in delicious Portuguese cuisine at a variety of local restaurants. Come and soak up the allure of Bairro Alto — a captivating blend of traditional charm and modern city life.
Don't miss the magnificent panoramic views over the city from the Miradouro da Graça. It’s the perfect place to stop for a coffee or maybe a glass of vinho verde and take in the faded majesty of this amazing city.
If you’re taking the tour on a Tuesday or a Saturday, you have to visit the Feira da Ladra, the city’s famous flea market. There’s no better place to while away an hour or two. Our Green Route to the castle packs so much in. We think it’s one of the very best ways to discover some of the city’s treasures.
