    Description

You already know that Iceland is a country filled with dramatic and rugged landscapes, but did you know that it’s equally beautiful below ground? Conveniently located only 30 minutes outside of Reykjavik, the Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel is one of Iceland’s largest.

On this 3-hour excursion from Reykjavik you’ll head underground and explore the inner workings of a volcanic eruption. Formed over 5,000 years ago, the lava tunnel is an impressive 10 metres high and 30 metres wide in some places. You’ll spend one hour exploring about 350 metres into the tunnel, accompanied by an expert, English-speaking guide. You’ll learn about the tunnel’s geology as well as Iceland’s volcanic history.

Be sure to check out the colourful tunnel walls; the different mineral types of the rock will sparkle in the beam of your flashlight. And, if you visit during the hours of daylight, spectacular shafts of sunlight will shine through a collapsed section of roof and illuminate the tunnel floor. It truly is a spectacular setting!
