Description
When Pennsylvania’s founder, William Penn, designed the plans for Philadelphia, he left some land in the centre which was to be used for public space and public buildings. However, it took 200 years before City Hall was built, and for his plans to finally be envisioned. The result was so spectacular he would surely have been impressed. A 37-foot statue of Penn sits atop the tower as a tribute.
City Hall was the tallest building in Philadelphia for nearly 100 years until the “gentleman’s agreement” ensuring no building in the city was to be taller than it was broken in 1987. In fact, it was the tallest inhabitable building in the world between 1894 and 1908. However, it still holds the record as having Philadelphia’s highest open-air observation deck. Take the City Hall Tower Tour to enjoy spectacular views of Philly's skyline and Benjamin Franklin Parkway from almost 550 feet above the city streets.
If the views aren’t enough, the building itself is sure to impress. Constructed of brick, marble and granite, some blocks of which are 22 feet thick, it is the largest municipal building in America and contains almost 700 rooms. Over 250 ornate sculptures adorn the spectacular façade, yet, Philadelphia City Hall was once described as the “ugliest building in America” and there were even plans to demolish it in the 1950s. Nowadays it is a National Historic Landmark and is one of America’s most honoured architectural structures. Enjoy the City Hall Tower Tour and take in breathtaking views from atop this piece of American history.
