Description
The Tower of London is one of London’s defining sites and it’s been attracting tourists since as long ago as the time of Elizabeth I. Visit the Tower for yourself and you’re sure to understand what makes exploring it such an unforgettable experience. Among the Tower’s many highlights are the Crown Jewels, which have been on public display for more than 350 years! And there’s only been once serious attempt to steal them, which is a good thing as they’re not insured.
Curiously, though the Tower of London is today seen as an emblem of national solidity and security, the Saxon Londoners of the 11th century, when it was built, saw it as an imposition of unwelcome foreign rule as it was built by the invading Normans. The castle’s oldest and most famous building is the White Tower, which was started soon after William the Conqueror had finished with his conquering. It’s also the reason the whole castle is known as the Tower.
You can explore the White Tower and the nearby Bloody Tower, which is infamous as the probable murder site of the Princes in the Tower, who disappeared before the coronation of Richard III. Another highlight is the old Royal Mint, which produced coins for the crown for more than five centuries!
The Tower used to be part zoo. Today, the only animals it’s home to are ravens. They’re not just any old birds though as people say that if they leave the Tower, the kingdom will fall. So make sure, you don’t scare them off! There’s nowhere else in London quite like the Tower. You’re sure to have a brilliant time while learning a lot about London’s history.
