Top 3 hop-on hop-off Edinburgh attractions
Board one of our double-decker bus tours and leisurely explore the charm and iconic sights of Edinburgh at your own pace.
Here are three must-see destinations, along with details about where to hop on and off:
Edinburgh Castle
You can’t come to Edinburgh without visiting the incredible Edinburgh Castle, so hop off at Johnston Terrace to climb Castlehill and explore its many delights. You can see two separate museums, the famous One O’Clock Gun, the Great Hall, the Royal Palace, the Stone of Destiny and more!
Tip:
Try to visit early in the morning or later in the afternoon to avoid the crowds. The castle can get quite busy, particularly during the summer months.
City Sightseeing Bus Tour Stop: Johnston Terrace
Palace of Holyroodhouse
Once back on the Edinburgh tourist open top bus, the next place you have to hop off is the Palace of Holyroodhouse, the main Scottish residence of British Kings and Queens for nearly 500 years. The palace is open to the public, though don’t expect to see any royals wandering about as it closes when they’re there!
Tip: The Palace is open daily from 09:30 to 16:30 during the summer months, but the hours can vary during the winter season.
City Sightseeing Bus Tour Stop: Holyrood
Camera Obscura
For something a little different, our last recommendation is that you hop off at Lawnmarket to visit the Camera Obscura, which has been enthralling both locals and visitors since Queen Victoria was on the throne. Here you’ll get a completely unique view of the city and enjoy five floors of optical illusions! Hop on our Edinburgh hop-on hop-off bus tour to discover the top attractions in Edinburgh!
Tip: Camera Obscura is open daily from 09:30 to 19:30.
Besides the camera obscura itself, the top floor of the building offers a 360-degree viewing platform with incredible views of Edinburgh, including the Royal Mile, Edinburgh Castle, and Arthur’s Seat.
City Sightseeing Bus Tour Stop: Lawnmarket
Fun facts about Edinburgh
Did you know Scotland’s capital is the greenest city in the UK with 112 parks and more trees per head of population than any other UK city? It also has more listed buildings than any other city in Britain. Other quirky facts are that the famous Edinburgh Castle is built on an extinct volcano and the Royal Mile isn’t actually a mile long – its one mile and 107 yards to be exact!
After a long day of sightseeing aboard our Edinburgh double-decker bus tour, enjoy an Irn Bru (the best-selling soft drink in Scotland) and some haggis, a combination of sheep heart, lungs and liver mixed with oats and onions, and served with neeps (turnips) and tatties (mashed potatoes) – it tastes better than it sounds! Wash it all down with a wee dram of whisky, Scotland’s national drink. The best way to discover the city is on board our official hop-on hop-off Edinburgh bus tour!
