Langjökull Ice Cave Experience

The Langjökull Ice Cave is deep in the heart of the Langjökull Ice Glacier. To reach it you need to walk a 550-metre ice tunnel that was carved out of the century’s old ice of this enormous glacier. Standing inside a glacier, some 30 metres below its surface, really is an experience like no other.

Travelling from Reykjavik, your first stop will be at Deildartunguhver, a hot spring that pumps near-boling water out of the ground at the incredible rate of 180 litres per second! You’ll also visit the spectacular waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafossar. Hraunfossar means ‘lava falls’ and the name comes from the fact that the water for the falls rises up through the porous rocks of the Hallmundarhraun lava field, which was laid down after an enormous volcanic eruption over a thousand years ago.

There’ll be time for lunch at Husafell, before heading for the glacier itself. The drive to the ice cave will be in a giant truck with enormous wheels. Crossing the glacier is an amazing experience, like being on another world.
