Dohány Synagogue Complex
The Dohány Synagogue Complex is simply incredible. It’s the largest in Europe and the second-largest in the world. This architectural masterpiece, built in 1859, showcases an inspiring blend of Moorish, Romantic and Art Nouveau styles. The complex also houses the Tree of Life statue, a sombre reminder of the 400,000 Hungarian Jews murdered during World War II. This silver metal weeping willow has thousands of leaves inscribed with the names of some of the Holocaust’s many victims.
Hungarian Jewish Museum
Inside the Dohány Synagogue, you can visit the Hungarian Jewish Museum. This engaging museum allows visitors to explore the story of Hungarian Jewish heritage, and entrance is included in our great-value ticket. The museum has an unbelievable history. Right in the middle of the Second World War, two enterprising members of staff thought to hide some of its most valuable artefacts in the cellar. Thanks to this courageous act, visitors can now see priceless items such as 3rd-century Jewish headstones and ancient manuscripts.
