Only an hour’s drive from Barcelona, majestic Montserrat couldn’t be further from the hubbub of the Catalan capital. Literally translated as “serrated mountains”, the jagged, rocky spires do indeed look like they’ve been sawn off with a bread knife! This dramatic scenery is complemented by the spectacular Montserrat monastery, nestled snugly amongst the towering turrets of rock. This 11th-century marvel continues to function as a monastery to this day, with a population of roughly 80 monks who live, sleep, eat and pray here. Just staring in awe at the spectacular combination of monastery + mountain is an unforgettable, otherworldly experience. Other optional highlights include a bird’s-eye view from the cable car and the 9th-century Black Virgin sculpture, said to have magical healing powers.
