Description
Seville Cathedral
Sevillanos are fiercely proud of their incredible city, and there is nothing that they’re prouder of than the iconic Seville Cathedral. As soon as you lay eyes on the impressive edifice, you’ll understand why. This behemoth is the world’s largest Gothic Cathedral. And its history is as impressive as its size. It was built on the site of the city’s original 12th-century mosque and inside, you’ll see the tomb where the famous explorer Christopher Columbus was laid to rest.
The cathedral’s cherished bell tower and bronze weathervane are equally revered; so much so that they have their own nicknames: the Giralda and the Giraldillo. The climb up to the top of the Giralda is not for the faint-hearted, but once you get there, the views are spectacular. Unusually, there are virtually no stairs. You’ll walk up and down 35 ramps, originally constructed so that guards on horseback could reach the top.
Back on the ground floor, the pretty Patio de los Naranjos is what remains of the original mosque’s main courtyard. This oasis of tranquillity is filled with fragrant orange trees. As you wander through, make sure you take a look at the large fountain in the middle - this is where worshippers used to wash before entering the mosque back in the 12th century.
Iglesia Colegial del Salvador
A mere 500 years later, the Iglesia del Salvador was built. Its rectangular, terracotta exterior is charming, but step inside to really be impressed. Marvel at the exceptional sacramental chapel, its immense gold altar and the astonishing 17th-century wood carvings, Jesús de la Pasión and El Cristo del Amor. No trip to Seville is complete without a visit to its most famous and loved building. Book today with City Sightseeing!
